HAMPTON TOWN CLERK ISSUES INCOMPLETE AND MISLEADING INFORMATION REGARDING VOTER REGISTRATION LAWS

August 21, 2024

Message to Detective Tracy (DOJ) and Secretary Scanlan (SOS).

I was informed yesterday there have been atleast 3 Hampton residents who were told by the town clerk's office that the had missed the August 9, 2024 deadline to register to vote for the upcoming elections.

After this was brought to the attention of a Hampton Zoning Board member she began to investigate why this information was being told to people who were trying to register in Hampton.  It seems that the clerk's office could only produce excuses.

Yesterday, the town posted a message which is also misleading.  And perhaps may deter people from registering to vote as the state law currently allows.

This information is pertinent to the ongoing investigation. It seems odd that the made up "deadline" date the clerk's office was giving to the public happened to be the same date your office ordered the former Town Clerk to resign by.

It is apparent that the retirement of former Clerk Doheny is not enough to ensure that future Hampton elections will be held with integrity and in accordance with state election law.

At the very least, the town should immediately be ordered to issue a press release with accurate information about deadlines for registering to vote in the upcoming 2024 elections.

If Hampton is not capable to promptly post a press release then perhaps the Secretary of State's office should issue one clarifying the elections laws regarding voter registration deadlines.

How many Hampton citizens have already been denied their voting right?
