THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN

October 24, 2024

Hampton, New Hampshire

"Sawyer said he served with Waddell and called him a "model of what a selectman should be in this community."

First off, if Waddell was a model of a selectman," the town is in BIG trouble. A good guy does not make a good public servant. Accepting a cable job with the town cable committee as a sitting selectman does not evidence acceptable ethical values. Selectmen alter code of ethics after alleged conflict

You see, the good old boys just change or petition to change any law or policy that gets in the way. The last time I checked, the town's ethics policy was "non-binding" rendering it meaningless. As selectman, I asked the board to consider removing that language to hold all officials in the town accountable. (The boys were all against that one).

Second, Bridle and Rage are merely members of the local cabal who want their buddy back.

"I reiterate my prior motion to appoint Rich Sawyer as selectmen," said Select Board member Chuck Rage, who initially proposed Sawyer for the position at their Oct. 21 meeting. He cited the upcoming Nov. 5 election and noted the board is starting to review the town budget and proposed warrant articles for the March Town Meeting.

"We don't have to train him," Rage said.

Bridle seconded the motion to appoint Sawyer, and Board Chair Amy Hansen cast the deciding vote."

Third, our newly elected selectman seems to be the only one who gets the job.

"Beriont pushed to delay the vote on Monday to allow other candidates to step forward. She said she felt "uncomfortable" appointing someone to the board who lost an election without informing the public about the vacancy or the process to fill it.

This feels like kind of rushed, and it doesn't feel transparent to me and feels problematic," she said at the Oct. 21 meeting."

Beriont is right.

Lastly, the Chairman did not have much to offer.

"Hansen further explained her vote for Sawyer, noting that she didn't want to create a vacancy on the town's Planning Board.

When Town Manager Jamie Sullivan clarified Grip could technically serve on both the Planning Board and Select Board, Beriont made a motion to appoint Grip to the position.

"We already voted and approved (Sawyer)," Hansen said."
